SACRAMENTO (AP) ? California is sending two firefighting airplanes to help combat destructive wildfires in Colorado.

Gov. Jerry Brown on Friday directed the California National Guard to send two C-130J airplanes along with about 30 crewmembers. The aircrafts are equipped with special firefighting systems that can drop up to 3,000 gallons of water or retardant in one pass.

They are scheduled to depart from Channel Islands Air National Guard Station on Saturday morning.

Brown said California is putting its experience in fighting large-scale wildfires to work in Colorado, which is experiencing the most devastating fires in state history.

The two states have helped each other before. Colorado sent fire crews into California as recently as 2008 when more than 2,000 fires burned across the state.

The federal government is expected to reimburse costs.

Google unveils Nexus Seven -- its own tablet

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Google will sell a small tablet computer bearing its brand in a challenge to Amazon's Kindle Fire.

The Nexus 7 is designed specifically for Google Play, the online store that sells movies, music, books, apps and other content - the things Amazon.com Inc. also sells for its tablet computer.

Both tablets have screens that measure 7 inches diagonally, smaller than the nearly 10 inches on Apple Inc.'s popular iPad. The Nexus 7 will also be light - at about 0.75 pound, compared with the Kindle Fire's 0.9 pound. The iPad weighs 1.44 pounds.

The Nexus 7 will ship in mid-July starting at $199 - the same price as the Kindle Fire. By contrast, iPads start at $499. Customers can start ordering it through Google on Wednesday, initially in the U.S., Canada and Australia.

Andrew Rassweiler, an analyst with IHS iSuppli, said he suspects Google will be subsidizing the tablet to sell it starting at $199.

The Nexus 7 has more features than the Kindle, including a front-facing camera. The Kindle is believed to be roughly break even at that price. Samsung Electronics Co. sells a tablet similar to Google's for $250.

The Nexus 7 will run the next version of Google Inc.'s Android operating system, called Jelly Bean.

Google also announced a home entertainment device called Nexus Q. It sends content from your personal collection or YouTube to your existing TV and speaker systems. You control it through a separate Android phone or tablet.

The Nexus Q, which Google is calling the world's first "social streaming device," will available in July in the U.S. initially and sell for $299.

Google made the announcements during a keynote to open its annual conference in San Francisco for computer programmers.

Google also demonstrated its futuristic, Internet-connected glasses by having parachutists jump out of a blimp hovering about 7,000 feet above San Francisco. The audience got live video feeds from their glasses as they descended to land on the roof of the Moscone Center, the location of the conference.

Google is making prototypes of the device, known as Project Glass, available to test. They can only be purchased - for $1,500 - at the conference this week, for delivery early next year. Google is also giving all 6,000 attendees a Nexus 7, Nexus Q and Google Nexus phone for free.

At the event, Google provided an update on its Google Plus social network, which the company considers crucial to challenging Facebook Inc. for users and advertising. Google said the year-old social network now has 250 million, far smaller than Facebook's more than 900 million but larger than what Facebook had at the one-year mark.

Google said more people use Google Plus from mobile devices than traditional computers. On Wednesday, it introduced a Google Plus app for Android tablets and said one for the iPad is coming "very soon."

Google's expansion into the tablet market with the Nexus 7 brings another imposing entrant into what is already a battle of tech heavyweights. Last week, Microsoft Corp. announced its own tablet, Surface. Expected to go on sale this fall, Surface will run on a revamped version of Windows and compete directly with the iPad.

Although the tablet carries the Google brand, the machine will be made by AsusTek Computer Inc. Google also recently expanded into the device-making business with its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility, but the company has stressed that it intends to continue to rely on Asus and other manufacturers that have embraced Android.

There are already other Android-powered tablets on the market, but none have proven nearly as popular as the iPad or Kindle Fire. That has raised worries at Google as more people rely on tablets to surf the Internet.

If Apple and Amazon establish themselves as the dominant tablet makers, they could set up their operating systems in ways that de-emphasize Google's Internet search engine and other services. Apple develops its own system, while Amazon modifies Android for use in Kindles.

Apple already has announced that the next version of the iPad operating system will abandon Google's digital maps as the built-in navigation system. That shift could cause neighborhood merchants to spend less money advertising on Google.

Earlier Wednesday, Google unveiled a new search tool to help you get the right information at the right time on your mobile device. Called Google Now, the tool will be part of Jelly Bean, which will be available in mid-July. Some devices, including the Galaxy Nexus, will get the upgrade automatically over the air.

With Google Now, if you say "traffic," for example, it will look at your usual commute to work and show you alternative routes if there's a lot of traffic. It will tell you the scores of your favorite sports teams automatically, and it will keep you up to date on flight statuses if you are flying somewhere. You'll have to activate Google Now to start using it.

Google Inc. said the Google Now feature will get smarter as you use it more.

The feature bears resemblance to the Siri virtual assistant on Apple's iPhone.

Jelly Bean will also come with the ability to share photos by tapping two phones together, using an emerging wireless technology called near-field communications.

Google said there are a million new Android devices activated daily, up from 400,000 a year ago. Google says there's particularly fast growth in emerging markets such as Brazil and India. Android is now the chief rival to the mobile software running Apple's iPhone and iPad.

The new Dell XPS 14 (Summer 2012) ($1,499 direct) is approximately the same size and a bit heavier than its mainstream laptop predecessor, the Dell XPS 14z ($1,299 direct, 4 stars). Along the way the system has improved its looks, lost an optical drive, and gained some battery capability with some extra weight. This time the XPS 14 has joined the ultrabook ranks, and must be judged along those lines. It's still a system made for people who need just a bit more computing power than they can get with the average laptop. Ultimately, it's a hefty performance ultrabook that has appeal, but only to a more niche audience, rather than the general population.

Design and Features
Dell has improved the XPS 14's design, making it sleeker and less clunky looking than the previous Dell XPS 14z, which had large speaker grilles flanking and clashing with the contrasting silver-colored keyboard. The new system's chiclet-style black keyboard with concave keys matches the dark gray surrounding bezel better. An aluminum ring surrounds the system, highlighting its I/O ports. The new touchpad is now made of a glass surface, with integrated left and right mouse buttons. Using the new touchpad with two-finger swipes to scroll was smooth and not "grabby" like it is on some touchpads. The keyboard is backlit, as you would expect on a $1,499 system. The XPS 14's arrow keys are half convex (up and down) and half concave (left and right). This matches other Dell ultrabooks like the Dell Inspiron 14z ($799 direct, 4 stars). Basically, the system looks like a big brother to the Dell XPS 13 ($999.99 direct, 4 stars). The XPS 14's lid is silver-colored aluminum, but if you order the WWAN-equipped model you'll get black leather on the lid. All XPS 14 models share the silicone-covered aluminum base and dark grey magnesium palm rest with "soft touch paint."

The XPS 14 comes with a 14-inch widescreen LED backlit panel, as its name suggests. The display comes with a seamless piece of Gorilla Glass protecting it.?Although it's not a 1,920-by-1,080 true 1080p HD panel, the screen's 1,600-by-900 resolution is better than that of most other 13- and 14-inch panels. Most of those come in a 1,366-by-768 resolution, which is sufficient for 720p HD. Using the XPS 14 will let you?see more on a website or?blow up a picture more clearly than?will a system with a lower-resolution screen.

The system's I/O ports punch through the XPS 14's machined-aluminum ring surround. The ports are plentiful for an ultrabook or other ultraportable. The system comes with two USB 3.0 ports (one of which is a PowerShare charging port), a HDMI port, Mini DisplayPort, Ethernet, Kensington lock port, 3-in-1 card reader, and a headset/headphone jack. This trounces the XPS 13, which lacks HDMI, card reader, and Ethernet. The XPS 14 is 0.8 by 13.2 by 9.2 inches (HWD), so it's larger in all dimensions compared to the Editors' Choice for ultrabooks, the HP Folio 13-1020us ($899.99 list, 4 stars). Strangely enough, it's very close to the dimensions of the Dell XPS 14z (0.9 by 13.19 by 9.21 inches), though the new model still looks better.

Like the previous model, the new XPS 14 supports WiDi using its built-in Intel 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and WiDi software. It's up to you to get a compatible WiDi adapter for your TV. The new XPS 14 doesn't have an optical drive, though the older XPS 14z had one in the same-size package. Optical drives may be less important these days, but it's disappointing that Dell couldn't make the system even thinner without the drive.

The XPS 14 weights a portly 4.7 pounds by itself, and 5.6 pounds with the AC adapter. It's not heinous, but it's more than a pound heavier than the 3.3-pound HP Folio 13-1020US and over two pounds heavier than the 2.5-pound Toshiba Portege Z835-P370 ($1,049.99 list, 4 stars). Granted, the Toshiba Z835-P370 felt flimsier due to its lower weight and ultra-thin chassis. You'll definitely feel the extra heft of the XPS 14 whether you're traveling across the room or across the country.

The extra heft doesn't apply to the XPS 14's software load; that's fairly light. The system comes with Skype preloaded as well as a 30-day trial version of McAfee SecurityCenter. The other preloaded software like Office Starter, Adobe Reader X, and WebCam Central are useful additions. The 1.3-megapixel webcam comes with dual-array microphones for easy Web conferencing (via Skype or the messaging client of your choice). The system's 500GB hard drive is supplemented by a 32GB mSATA SSD, for the Intel Smart Response Technology aspect of ultrabook certification. Dell offers a 512GB SSD-only option for $1,999.

Performance
The XPS 14's third-generation Intel Core i7-3517U processor, 8GB of DDR2 memory, and Nvidia GeForce GT 630M help contribute to speedy multimedia benchmark results. The system took only 1 minute 48 seconds to complete the Handbrake video encode test and 4:05 for the Photoshop CS5 test. These are much faster than the times for the second-generation Intel Core i5-2467M-powered HP Folio 13-1020us (which scored 2:29 in Handbrake, 5:24 in CS5) as well as the third-generation Intel Core i5-3317U?powered Dell Inpiron 14z (which scored 1:58 in Handbrake, 4:35 in CS5) and Sony VAIO T13 (SVT13112FXS) ($799 direct, 4 stars) (which scored 2:03 in Handbrake, 4:40 in CS5). In addition to a higher base clock speed, the i7-3517U can use Turbo Boost to run at up to 3GHz for a short period of time. The XPS 14 is one of the systems you should look at if you're trying to complete photo or video hobby projects quickly.

The XPS 14 (Summer 2012) comes with an Nvidia GeForce GT 630M discrete GPU, which works instead of the integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics in the Core i7 processor to give users a bit more 3D oomph when they need it. It's not a lot of oomph, since Intel HD Graphics 4000?is good for about 20fps on Crysis at medium settings on the Sony VAIO T13 and the GT 630M only increases that to 27fps in the XPS 14. It's much the same on the Lost Planet 2 test at middle quality: 13fps for the Sony T13, 29fps for the XPS 14. It is a somewhat significant numerical increase, but?the increase in playability isn't. We like to see at least 35 to 45fps at both tests to even consider them moderately playable, and at least 60 fps to call it smoothly playable. The mSATA SSD helped the XPS 14?earn a very good 3,348 score on the PCMark7 test, which measures the system's ability to handle mundane tasks. This is very close to the 3,150?that the HP Folio 13-1020us achieved,?so both should feel similarly speedy while Web browsing, using office apps, and during other day-to-day operations. The speed comes at an aural cost, however.?Although the system worked hard at topping the other ultrabooks on the benchmark tests, the system's cooling fans unerringly spooled up to full blast. This means that you'll want to have noise-cancelling headphones handy if you're into 3D games, video processing, or photo editing.

In terms of day-to-day operations, you'll get much of the day untethered with the XPS 14's 69Wh battery.?Although it's not replaceable, the built-in battery is good for 9 hours 37 minutes of battery life. That's not quite "all-day" battery life, but it's pretty good for a segment that gets anywhere from 5 hours up to 9 hours of battery life. That's certainly better than the 8:47 that the HP Folio 13-1020us got and much, much better than the 6:06 that the Dell Inspiron 14z scored.

The Dell XPS 14 certainly wins points for styling, screen resolution, Core i7 power, and battery life. But?those wins are tempered by the system's merely?okay 3D performance, bulky size and weight, and high price. The XPS 14 will appeal to those who want just a bit more and are prepared to pay more than a bit for it. Is the XPS 14 better than the Editors' Choice HP Folio 13-1020us? On a performance basis, yes. Is it $600 better than the HP Folio 13-1020us? Not really, especially since the XPS 14 is over a pound heavier yet has less than an hour more battery life. It's not quite the decisive trade-off that would unseat the current champ. Call the Dell XPS 14 a decent system for people who want more performance and are willing to endure more weight as a trade-off for quicker computing.

DALLAS (AP) ? A former Baylor basketball player is facing a federal extortion charge for allegedly threatening to release "derogatory information" about Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III unless he was paid.

Richard Khamir Hurd, 25, was arraigned Monday in federal court in Waco. His bond was set at $25,000.

A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that Griffin, the Baylor quarterback who was the No. 2 overall draft choice of the Washington Redskins, was the target of the alleged extortion attempt. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because authorities had not disclosed the fact.

Griffin was at an NFL rookie symposium Monday in Ohio, where players were not made available to reporters.

Court documents say that last week, Hurd contacted a representative from a St. Louis agency, threatening to publicize derogatory information about a client unless he was paid a "substantial sum" of money. The representative is identified in documents only by the initials B.D.

Griffin's agent is St. Louis-based Ben Dogra, who didn't respond to messages Monday. The documents don't name Griffin.

According to court documents, Hurd met at a Waco business Friday with someone who agreed to handle the transaction. After signing a non-disclosure agreement, handing over the information and receiving a check, Hurd was arrested by an undercover FBI agent, documents said.

Hurd's attorney did not return calls seeking comment.

Hurd's mother, Marlene Hurd, told The AP on Monday she'd heard that her son was in jail but wasn't aware of the details.

"Whatever it is, I pray by the grace of God that he's innocent," she said.

Griffin's Heisman Trophy, the first in the history of the world's largest Baptist university, came after he led the Bears to only their second 10-win season in 112 years. In his three-year career, Griffin set or tied 54 school records.

Washington traded three first-round picks and a second-rounder to the St. Louis Rams to move into the No. 2 slot to draft Griffin.

The past year also saw Baylor win the NCAA women's basketball championship with a 40-0 record and reach the round of 16 for the second time in three years in the men's tournament.

However, less than a week after the Lady Bears won the title, the NCAA put the Waco school on three years' probation after an investigation turned up hundreds of impermissible telephone calls and text messages sent to prep recruits by coaches and assistants on the two basketball teams.

Hurd played basketball at Baylor as a walk-on, from the 2004-05 season through the 2007-08 season, after a high school career at Heritage Christian Academy in Cleveland north of Houston, according to Baylor sports information. His brother, Lamar Hurd, also played at Heritage Christian and later at Oregon State.

The brothers helped Heritage Christian become one of the top private school programs in Texas, and the school's former coach, Jerome Tang, is now a Baylor assistant.

Newly elected DASB president Pablo?Zamorano?was sworn in last week. For the past year, he served on the senate as the chair of the finance committee. His original involvement with student government began during a Counseling 100 class where Pablo decided to become more involved with the things that happened between classes since his high school did not offer those kinds of opportunities.

During his time as chair of finance,?Zamorano?said he had a strong sense of leadership in guiding the committee?s direction. But this inadvertently resulted in him trying to take all the tasks on himself which not only overloaded him, but made some other members unhappy.

?So I had to learn to delegate throughout the year, assign tasks and make members feel included,? said Zamorano. ?I learned to work with others. I was definitely more abrasive at the beginning of the year and I had conflicts with other chairs and other members. I learned to treat people with tact and I learned how to approach them if I disagreed with them.?

Zamorano said he believes that his skills in delegating tasks and working with others will help him during his presidency. Currently many De Anza College programs are being cut and he said he expects to be negotiating with program coordinators over financial constraints.

Zamorano said the hardest part of running for office was managing his time. ?I was taking 20 units that quarter, and I was still in the senate as chair of finance so I still had those responsibilities, and senate I would say is like is an eight-hour job a week, except you don?t get paid,? he said. ?If you?re more involved, you put in more hours. Like the chairs put in more hours, presidents put in more hours.?

But Zamorano?s work is far from over. His new goals are to increase student involvement in the DASB and to increase the senate?s involvement by collaborating more with clubs and activism on campus.

He said, ?The way I want to change our campus basically is to raise that awareness and hopefully we can raise our concerns of our budget, not just the DASB budget, I mean the state budget and the educational budget.?

Soon after the Big Bang, heavier elements emerge: Tin-100, a doubly magic nucleus

ScienceDaily (June 20, 2012) ? A few minutes after the Big Bang the universe contained no other elements than hydrogen and helium. Physicists have now succeeded in producing tin-100, a very unstable yet important element for understanding the formation of heavier elements.

Stable tin, as we know it, comprises 112 nuclear particles -- 50 protons and 632 neutrons. The neutrons act as a kind of buffer between the electrically repelling protons and prevent normal tin from decaying. According to the shell model of nuclear physics, 50 is a "magic number" that gives rise to special properties. Tin-100, with 50 protons and 50 neutrons, is "doubly magic," making it particularly interesting for nuclear physicists.

Shooting xenon-124 ions at a sheet of beryllium, the international team headed by physicists from the TU Muenchen, the Cluster of Excellence Origin and Structure of the Universe and the GSI in Darmstadt succeeded in creating tin-100 and analyzing its subsequent decay. Using specially developed particle detectors, they were able to measure the half-life and decay energy of tin-100 and its decay products. Their experiments confirmed that tin-100 has the fastest beta decay of all atomic nuclei, as previously predicted by theoretical physicists.

A repeat of the experiment is slated for the near future at the RIKEN research center in Japan. The beam intensity at RIKEN is higher in the mean time, allowing even more precise measurements. The aim of the research work is to improve the understanding of processes in the formation of heavy elements during explosions on the surface of compact stars. In addition, the researchers hope to draw conclusions on the neutrino mass from the measurements.

Chris Brown/Drake Nightclub Brawl: More Victims Emerge

The list of alleged victims in the aftermath of last week's bottle-smashing brawl
 between members of Chris Brown and Drake's crews at a New York nightclub increased by two over the weekend as the police investigation into the scuffle got sidetracked into reports that a shot was fired inside club W.i.P. during the fight.

In addition to Brown, who posted a photo of his split chin, as well as the singer's bodyguard, who sustained a head injury, NBA star Tony Parker and Australian tourist Hollie C., two more people have come forward to say they were also injured in the melee. 21-year-old model Ingrid Gutierrez's lawyer, Sal Strazzullo, spoke to E! News about what happened to his client early Thursday morning as she chilled out at Brown's table.

"[Ingrid] was with Chris Brown and his entourage just having a good time...she was at his table...right next to him when this occurred," he said. "She was just having a good time, a 21-year-old out, a young lady at a nightclub in Manhattan and all of a sudden a bottle came from [the direction of] the Drake table." Strazzullo said his client has informed him that a note was passed from Drake to Brown "in regards to something with Rihanna," but that he could not reveal the details of that alleged note because he can't verify the authenticity of its contents.

"Then ... Chris Brown was about to get up and leave with his entourage and that's when a bottle came from [the direction of] Drake's table to Chris Brown's table." The model reportedly suffered a blow to the head and is out of the hospital and resting after sustaining bruises, stitches and trauma to her face, with Strazzullo suggesting that "plastic surgery is probably likely."

Perhaps hinting that legal action could be on the horizon, he added, "basically like any model ... your looks are everything and with today's technology, with HD, a small scar, even though this one is not small, is going to be magnified to look really severe." The attorney also suggested that surveillance tapes
 from the club — which MTV News reported have been subpoenaed by the NYPD and are being reviewed — would effectively answer who started the brawl, hinting that it was sparked by Drake's table.

Another victim, Lucy Pavlovsky, suffered a gash on her arm that reportedly required 12 stitches and her lawyer told TMZ that a lawsuit against the responsible parties, including the club, may be on the horizon. The SoHo nightclub was shut down by police on Saturday along with Greenhouse, which is located in the same building and jointly owned.

In addition, W.i.P.'s manager, Jonathan Cantor, was arrested on unrelated charges
 tied to two outstanding warrants early Friday morning.

The NYPD is also investigating reports that gunshots may have been fired inside the club as the bottles were flying between the crews. The Associated Press reported that some witnesses said they heard gunshots during the early-morning fight, but no one has reported seeing a weapon.

To date, Brown and his attorney have given statements to police, but a spokesperson for Drake said the Canadian MC has no plans to submit to questioning. "Why would he turn himself in when he did not commit any wrongdoing?" rep Kelly Bush told the New York Post. Over the weekend, police denied reports that Drake was to be arrested during his show at Jones Beach on Saturday.

While Brown's attorney has been heavily hinting that Drake was involved in starting the melee and that his client was a victim, Brown expressed his own feelings of victimization on Twitter on Friday. In since-deleted posts, Brown lashed out at gossip site TMZ, writing "@tmz y'all full of s---!!! It's insane how your stories are not informative at all and far from f---ing facts!" Brown, who has a history of posting Twitter screeds and then quickly removing them, added, "It's really sad. All y'all in that office sit behind a desk and hide behind ur lives by trying to tarnish others! Good game!"

Kanye West Lines Up Two Shows At Atlantic City Casino

After Beyoncé's three-night stint at Revel, Kanye West will perform two shows of his own July 6 and 7.

Kanye West has been in Europe over the past few weeks, where he's performed dates on his Watch the Throne Tour with Jay-Z, premiered his "Cruel Summer" short film in France and spent a lot of time with Kim Kardashian. But in early July, 'Ye will finally be back in the States to perform two shows at Revel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Beyoncé helped launch the $2.4 billion casino and entertainment venue over Memorial Day weekend with three shows, and now Kanye will bring his star power to Revel in what's being billed as his first solo show since performing at last year's Coachella festival.

Despite the "solo" announcement, we're hoping that doesn't mean 'Ye's set will be free of features, as he's gearing up to drop his G.O.O.D. Music compilation album, led by the single "Mercy," featuring Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz.

Kanye will perform in Revel's Ovation Hall, designed by Cirque du Soleil's Scèno Plus, on July 6 and 7. Tickets will be on sale through Ticketmaster.com on Friday, beginning at 10 a.m.

Last month, Mr. West premiered his new short film, "Cruel Summer," in Cannes, France, revealing that it bears the same name as the upcoming G.O.O.D. Music album. The film stars Kid Cudi as a car thief who falls in love with a blind Arabian princess, and to share it with the world, Kanye had the film projected onto seven video screens inside a tented pyramid on the Mediterranean Sea. With his reputation for doing things big, we can't wait to see what he brings to his two-night stint at Revel.
