In the digital age, wither the campaign button?

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Eugene Ola was on a street corner hawking some political buttons with phrases like "Believe in America" and featuring photos of a smiling GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan. But most passersby simply smiled and kept on walking, barely looking at the piece of cardboard he carted around with 50 buttons fastened to it.

In this era of high-tech and non-stop social networking, the campaign button has lost its luster as a central way to promote candidates and their causes. Politicians and their parties instead push their messages with a relentless barrage of television ads, emails and mobile phone alerts, while many voters express their opinions via tweets, Facebook posts and blogs.

"Maybe they are just going out of fashion," said Ola, 60, who lives in Washington, D.C., and travels the country selling paraphernalia at political gatherings, football games and medical conferences.

Buttons extolling the Republican ticket and tearing into Democrats haven't disappeared entirely, but they are far from ubiquitous. The days when many delegates were seen littered with partisan messages from seemingly head to toe appear to be long past. Today, attendees roaming the convention halls are more likely to have an iPhone strapped to their belt or a Bluetooth hanging from one ear than a button with Romney's picture fastened to their lapel.

"We have had pictures of our buttons taken a thousand times," said Jane Morton, 46, who traveled with her 19-year-old son from Kansas City to sell buttons that say "Show 44 the door," and depict a foot kicking a cartoon image of Obama. "I guess people are just into digital media these days."

Campaign buttons have been part of American politics since the days of President George Washington. Some of the first buttons were sewn on clothes, or worn similar to a necklace. Those eventually gave way to metal buttons with fastening pins.

These days, the most modern form is the digital variety ? "buttons" decorating candidate websites, emails to potential voters and on social networking sites.

To communicate their messages, campaigns have fully moved to online media, said Evan Cornog, a presidential historian and dean of the school of communication at Hofstra University. Increasing urbanization and longer commutes have also likely had a role in diminishing the usefulness of buttons, he said.

"Who is going to see your button on the Long Island Expressway?" he said.

The hotter the campaign, the more intense the interest in buttons. The historic nature of the 2008 campaign, for example, by virtue of Barack Obama ? the nation's first black president ? being on the ballot made them more collectible. And there were plenty of opportunities for some catchy phrases that worked well, like: "Sarah Palin, the hottest governor from the coldest state," juxtaposing the photogenic looks of the Republican vice presidential nominee and her state of Alaska.

Even if fewer people wear them and their effectiveness is muted, vendors say they don't have to sell many to turn a profit because production costs are low.

Morton, who was laid off in May from a product development firm, says her buttons cost $0.30 to make and she sells them for $3. And most vendors supplement by selling a wide range of other items, like hats, handkerchiefs and T-shirts.

Many conventiongoers buying buttons appear to be collecting them as souvenirs.

"I have buttons from every Republican ticket since World War II," said Andrew Malcolm, 69, a Los Angeles-based columnist who on Wednesday night bought a button, and then promptly put it in his pocket, before entering the convention hall.

Are they on display at home?

"I just have them in a bag," he said, adding wryly that if he ever wanted to put them on a wall it would require "some serious negotiations with my wife."

Begin Your Project With These Home Improvement Tips | lmaureen ...

An average-sized home that is poorly insulated can lose as much as 25 percent of its heat during the autumn and winter months. While updating your attic with glass fiber insulation materials may seem like a significant cost up front, you will quickly break even with the amount of money saved on your monthly heating bills.

Don?t throw out paintbrushes and rollers each time you use them! They can be cleaned and reused as long as you take care of them. Paint pans can be cleaned by letting them dry and then peeling off the paint. Don?t waste your money on pan liners as cleaning the pan itself is simple.

Increase your productivity when installing new kitchen cabinets by planning the order in which you will hang them. Install the top cabinets first so you do not have to lean over the base cabinets to attach them to the wall. Beginning in a corner is the easiest way to avoid fitting problems.

Make use of the internet to help you complete your projects. On the web, you can find the information you need to choose the right tools and buy the lowest-priced, most highly-effective supplies. In addition, you can usually confirm your plans by consulting online references, and get tips and strategies to help you get your work done successfully.

When you are making a home improvement that could affect the area around it, be sure to take proper care of the area. If you will be painting, it is a good idea to lay a tarp down to protect flooring and furniture from paint splatters and spills. Make sure to cover any surfaces that you do not want scratched or damaged.

Live with your new home?s flaws for a few days, or even weeks, in order to avoid making changes you may come to regret later. Give yourself time to see what works and what doesn?t in the home?s spaces. In fact, what you initially perceived as a flaw, may end up being the very thing that gives character to your new home.

For a professional finish when painting furniture or other items, consider using spray paint instead of painting with a brush. You can better control the application of the paint, and when the furniture dries, it will not have any brush marks. Modern spray paint comes in a huge range of finishing textures and colors, so you can find paint to complete almost any project.

If a person already has a pool then they should consider getting a slide for their pool. The slide will be easy to install and bring new life to an old pool. People can newly enjoy what they already have had. Buying a slide can be an easy way to improve a pool.

When hiring a contractor to do home improvements for you, always shop around and look for the best price. Always get at least three estimates and check the references and previous projects done by the contractor. Many contractors take a lot of pride in what they do and they are more than willing to show you photos from previous projects or referrals from happy customers.

Wallpaper borders are no longer as popular as they once were. However, you can add nice designs to your wall without them. Buy some stencils at your local craft store in a theme that matches your home decor and paint them in a line on your wall where normally the wallpaper border would go. This creates a nice visual effect for your eyes to follow in the room.

Working to improve your own home is something that intimidates many. The key to succeeding in such an endeavor is arming yourself with the proper information before you start. By using the tips and advice in this article, you will have the education necessary to greatly increase the appeal and value of your home.

Tapping engineers, families for hospital safety

A project announced Tuesday by Johns Hopkins University and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation aims to improve hospital safety by engineering safer treatment systems and getting more patients and families actively involved in care. (AP Photo)

(AP) ? Head of the hospital bed raised? Check. Patient's teeth brushed? Check.

Those simple but often overlooked steps can help protect some of the most critically ill patients ? those on ventilators ? from developing deadly pneumonia. And if they knew about them, family members could ensure the steps weren't forgotten.

Hospitals are rife with infections and opportunities for medical mistakes. Now, a nearly $9 million project at Johns Hopkins University aims to combine engineering with the power of patients and their families to prevent some of the most common threats.

The idea: Design patient safety to be more like a car's dashboard, which automatically signals drivers when the oil needs changing or if a passenger forgot to buckle up, or like the countdown systems that make sure no step is missed when a satellite is launched.

Today, safe, quality care largely depends on individual health workers remembering hundreds of steps without good ways to tell if they forget one, said Hopkins' patient safety expert Dr. Peter Pronovost. Getting it right takes what he calls "almost heroic efforts."

And too often, the people best able to spot early warning signs ? patients and their families ? are treated as passive bystanders rather than encouraged to participate in their care, he said.

"Who knows better than the family?" asked Dr. George Bo-Linn of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation's new Patient Care Program.

The foundation, created by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, announced Tuesday that it is funding the Hopkins work as the first step in a planned 10-year, $500 million effort to improve patient safety and family engagement in hospitals around the country. Separately, the Institute of Medicine has signed on to help, partnering with the National Academy of Engineering, to bring together top experts on how to design safety systems.

Sometimes the failure to merely discuss treatment with patients or their families causes the harm. Consider Nicole D. James, a commercial property manager in Elkridge, Md., who undergoes frequent overnight hospital stays to treat the intense pain of sickle cell anemia. One such visit turned into a miserable two-week stay when the ER doctor added a powerful antibiotic to James' usual pain treatment without telling her first ? a drug that worsened her sickle cell crisis.

It turned out the doctor had spotted a shadow on James' lung X-ray that he thought was pneumonia but that she could have told him, and her regular physician confirmed, really was old scar tissue.

"I know what's normal for me," said James, 37, who now insists that relatives drive past closer hospitals for Hopkins, where her doctor practices, no matter how late at night or intense her pain. Because the doctors know her, "I am not just somebody lying on the table. I am part of the team."

Tens of thousands of preventable deaths occur in U.S. hospitals every year. Numerous programs are under way to improve patient safety. Among them is the government's Partnership for Patients, funded by $1 billion from the new health care law, that is helping hospitals adopt proven safety strategies.

Hopkins' Pronovost led the creation of one of the most well-known ? a simple checklist that ensures hospital workers follow steps that lower the risk of deadly bloodstream infections from common IV catheters. That checklist now is being used in ICUs nationwide, and the government reported last year that those infections have plummeted by 60 percent as a result.

But catheter infections are just one of a dozen serious hospital-caused harms that threaten ICU patients, Pronovost said. Rather than fighting them one at a time, his new project will target multiple ICU threats simultaneously ? from ventilator-associated pneumonia to deadly blood clots ? without relying on old-fashioned paper checklists and with more family involvement.

It will require linking medical devices that today don't talk to each other, he said. For instance, pumps that deliver narcotic painkillers aren't linked to other devices that monitor breathing. If connected, the painkillers could be stopped automatically at the first sign of respiratory problems, a known side effect.

Other protections are far less complex. Keeping the head of the bed elevated at least 30 degrees and good oral hygiene are among the steps that help fend off the pneumonia that kills 36,000 people a year while they're on ventilators. That's something family members can watch for ? or they even can be trained to brush a loved one's teeth around the breathing tube.

Already, Hopkins has introduced a "family involvement menu" of care items. "We believe that you know the person that we are caring for far better than we do," the menu reads.

Ultimately, Pronovost envisions an iPad-like device that allows both health workers and family members to see at a glance which of dozens of required daily care steps have been performed and which still need to be.

"The beauty of checklists is it gives you that constant visual reminder," and an electronic, automated version is the next logical evolution, said Ann Marie Pettis, director of infection prevention at the University of Rochester Medical Center, who called the project intriguing.

Engaging the patient and family in some ways is tougher. Hospitals have had a hard time encouraging people to ask doctors and nurses if they've washed their hands, said Gina Pugliese of the Premier Safety Institute, a hospital improvement alliance.

"So many patients and families are hesitant to ever question the doctor," she said. "It's so important they get involved."

This Election Year Is Not About Small Business | Best Outsourcing ...

In an open letter to Governor Romney and President Obama, entrepreneur Gene Marks argues that what?s most important this election season is his son. And his son?s son.

shutterstock images

There are a lot of things about our political system that need changing.? Everyone has ideas.? Some want better re-districting.?? Others prefer online voting.? I?m strongly in favor of increasing the voting age.? And I state this from experience: my son just turned 18.

This is a kid who filled our car with diesel fuel last year because he ?didn?t realize? that the gas nozzle didn?t fit.? He?s a kid that lives in a room that would likely be condemned by Haiti?s health department.? He?s somehow (and I still haven?t figure this out) broken both his hand and foot, on separate occasions, playing soccer in that very same room.? He?s seen the new Batman movie 10 times already.? He climbed on the roof of our house with his other 18-year-old idiot friends to throw water balloons at passing cars.? He is 18.? And I am astonished to learn that this is someone who is legally now eligible to vote.? And his vote is worth the same as my vote.? This is truly what is wrong with our political system.

But I love him just the same.? And his brother and sister too, of course.? These are my kids.? And sadly, they are our country?s future.?? Yes, I run a small business.? And I have all the problems that any small business owner has: cash flow, collections, employees, finding new business, taxes.? But these problems don?t keep me up at night.? My kids keep me up at night: their health, success, future?and loud arguments during Xbox games.?? It?s not just about my small business.? It?s more than that.? It?s about my life.? And my kids? lives.? And their kids? lives.

So Governor Romney and President Obama, during your big convention speeches, you don?t need to say how important small businesses are to this country.? You don?t need to win our vote.? We would prefer that you redirect your focus to something more important to the small business owner than his or her small business: our children.? It?s our children who are the reason why we are doing what we are doing.? And the economy, the cost of college and health care, and our national debt impacts them directly. ?I ask you: lower your IQ.? Use smaller words.? Show a couple of YouTube videos.? But please: speak to my son.

Tell my son it?s OK to be wealthy.?

My son, like most kids I know, likes money.? He likes it because it buys him pizza and movie tickets and LeBron T -shirts.? He has a summer job.? He gets an allowance from me.? He wants to have enough money to afford nice things in his life.? Is this a bad thing?? I don?t think so.? But nowadays it feels like it?s a bad thing.? My customers, big and small, are other businesses. ?Many of the people who lead them are accused of being ?rich? because they earn more than $200,000 a year.? Others have been made to feel embarrassed to be in the financial services industry.? These customers have been laying low.? Hoarding their cash.? Not investing, hiring, expanding, or doing other things to flaunt their ?wealth.? ?Most small business owners I know earn a good living and work really hard.? They aren?t super-rich.? But they?d like to be.? We?d all like to be.? When will it be OK for our kids to want to be rich again?? What will our next President do to create an environment where it?s OK for our children to make lots of money?? A long term, low tax environment would be a great start.? And a few less swipes at the ?wealthy? wouldn?t hurt either.? Small business owners like me may not be ?fat cats.?? But we?d like our children to be.

Explain to my son how you?re going to help make education more affordable.?

Unfortunately, education is becoming too great a burden for many small business owners. ?The cost of higher education impacts just about everyone I know who runs a company.? That?s because most of us have kids.? I count myself very lucky that none of my kids are any where near smart enough to get into an Ivy League school.?? My son in particular will be one of those body-painted shirtless dopes, with his dopey fraternity friends, on a December Saturday cheering for his school?s final football game.? And for this I must pay anywhere from $30,000 to $50,000 per year.? Multiply that by three kids and you see what kind of an expense this is.? My son doesn?t want to be saddled with debt and I don?t want to see that happen either.? Perhaps you should offer some legitimate threats to withhold federal grants and loans to those schools that don?t reign in their excessive overheads.

Revisit your health care proposals.?

My son plays a lot of sports and he plays with a lot of enthusiasm?and little regard for his body. ?That means he gets injured a lot.? How much?? Do you get a volume discount from your kid?s orthopedist?? So health care is important to him.? Right now we pay for all his broken bones and pulled hamstrings.? But what about when he?s older?? Health care costs not only affect our employees.? These costs affect the children of our employees.? And our children too.? As these costs rise so do our own costs?and our anxiety.? This year?s candidates need to reassure us, and our voting-aged kids, that their plans will reduce the costs we?re paying for our children?s health care, and make things more affordable for our kids when they?re out on their own. ?We?re still very fuzzy on the numbers. ?The President needs to sell his health care reform plan again. ?(I know, it takes a while for all this to sink in.) ?Governor Romney needs to clearly explain his competing plan.? This way we can decide which candidate has a better way to reduce this enormous burden on our kids.

Tell us how you?re going to diminish the national debt quickly enough to help my son out.

The cost of health care isn?t the only enormous burden laying in wait for my son.? He may think that the price of two Jay-Z tickets is astronomical (and he?s right).? But it?s our national debt, currently approaching $16 trillion, that?s going to be his biggest problem in the future.? Even with all the talk about budget cuts and reducing the deficit, the fact is that both of the candidates? budget plans would increase our national debt from $3 trillion to $7 trillion over the next 10 years.? When economists say that more stimulus is needed and America can handle more debt because the debt is largely ?owed to the public,? they must not have kids.? Small business owners have kids.? We know that our debts, if not satisfied, will fall to them.? And we don?t want that to happen.? The whole point of being a successful business person is to make enough money to provide for our children, not to burden them.? I?m not sure my son gets this.? For now, he?s more interested in watching repeats of SpongeBob (yes?SpongeBob). ?What hard decisions would a leader make to truly cut our national debt in a shorter time frame so that when my kid wakes from his Nickelodeon stupor his future hasn?t been spent? ?I worry about this more than my business.

This election year, it?s not about small business.? Stop talking about us.? Because that?s not what we talk about.? The small business owners I know talk about lopsided little league games, chaotic birthday parties, over-priced trips to Disney, and excruciatingly long school plays.? We?re parents and we talk about our kids.? It?s not about how successful we are.? It?s about how our profits can make a happier life for our children.? And we want our President to be thinking the same way.

Evidence mounts of new massacre in Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? Row upon row of bloodied bodies wrapped in colorful blankets laid out on a mosque floor in a Damascus suburb. Long narrow graves tightly packed with dozens of victims. Nestled among them, two babies were wrapped in a single blood-soaked blanket, a yellow pacifier dangling beside them from a palm frond.

Evidence mounted on Sunday of a new massacre in Syria's deepening civil war, with activists reporting a killing spree by government forces after they seized the suburb of Daraya from rebel control three days ago. Reports of the death toll ranged from more than 300 to as many as 600.

Video footage posted by activists showed lineups of corpses, many of them men with gunshot wounds to their heads. During mass burials on Sunday, bodies were sprayed with water from hoses ? a substitute for the ritual washing prescribed by Islam in the face of so many dead.

The gruesome images appeared to expose the lengths to which the regime of authoritarian President Bashar Assad was willing to go to put down the rebellion that first broke out in March last year.

In an ominous commentary, Assad was quoted by his official media as saying his regime would carry on fighting "whatever the price."

"It is clear that was collective punishment," Khaled Al-Shami, an activist from Damascus, said of the killings in Daraya. "I am certain that the coming days will reveal more massacres, but by then others will have taken place and people will forget about Daraya."

The video footage and death toll were impossible to independently verify because of severe restrictions on media coverage of the conflict. However activists and residents have reported excessive use of force by the regime, with indiscriminate bombing from the air and ground.

"Daraya, a city of dignity, has paid a heavy price for demanding freedom," the Local Coordination Committees activist group said in a statement, adding that the Assad regime targeted residents with executions and revenge killings "regardless of whether they were men, women or children."

With a population of about 200,000, Daraya is part of "Rural Damascus," or Reef Damascus, a province that includes the capital's suburbs and farmland. It has been a stronghold of support for the rebels fighting the government since the start of the uprising, posing a particularly grave threat to Assad's seat of power.

Troops backed by tanks stormed the town on Thursday after a siege that lasted several days during which no one was allowed to enter or leave, activists and residents said. The rebels were no match for Assad's tanks and helicopter gunships.

Most of the killings, according to activists, took place Friday and Saturday. But the extent of the carnage only began to be revealed Sunday.

The British-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 45 more dead bodies were found in the streets of Daraya on Sunday and that they had been killed by "gunfire and summary executions." Among them, it said, were three women and two children. It said the toll for the past week was at least 320.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, the observatory's director, said activists on the ground identified 207 of the 320.

The Local Coordination Committees also reported 45 deaths Sunday and said 300 bodies were discovered a day earlier in Daraya, with a total of 633 people killed there since the government launched its assault. It said 1,755 people had been detained in Daraya, suggesting that hundreds more might turn up dead.

Video footage posted by the group showed rows of bodies wrapped in blood-soaked blankets, with date palms and tree branches strewn over them. Someone was shown spraying the bodies with a hose, a substitute for the ritual washing of the dead prescribed by Islam's teachings.

Another video posted on the Internet and dated Saturday showed dozens of bodies on the blood-splattered floor of a mosque. Pieces of paper were placed on some of them, presumably identifying them. The anonymous commentator, his voice choking, said there were at least 150 bodies there and blamed a pro-government militia known as shabiha for the killings.

A third video showed several dozen bodies, some in white shrouds, stacked next to each other in what appeared to be a courtyard of a mosque or a large home.

A photograph circulated by the Shaam News Network showed two babies, their pajama tops soaked in blood, wrapped in a blanket decorated with blue and white flowers. It said they were among dozens of victims buried Sunday in a mass grave.

Al-Shami, the Damascus activist, and Abdul-Rahman said Daraya was under a de facto curfew Sunday, as Assad's forces carried out house-to-house searches as well as execution-style killings. The Internet had been disconnected by authorities, said Al-Shami, who did not use his real name for fear of reprisals.

The fighting in Dayara, according to activists, is being carried out by the Syrian army's elite 4th Division, which is led by Assad's brother, Maher. The division is by far the best trained and armed outfit and is primarily tasked with securing the capital.

One theory as to what triggered such a large-scale military operation was that rebel mortar teams have targeted the capital's military Mazzeh airport, which abuts Daraya. Activists said the regime was intent on protecting the facility as a potential gateway out of the capital for Assad and pillars of his regime if the situation dramatically worsens.

Britain's Middle East minister, Alistair Burt, said on Sunday that if confirmed, the Daraya killings "would be an atrocity on a new scale requiring unequivocal condemnation from the entire international community."

Still, the battle for Daraya showed the regime to be struggling to control Damascus and its suburbs, though the firepower available to it is far superior to anything the rebels might have. Government forces are stretched thin, with a major ongoing battle for control of the nation's largest city, Aleppo in the north, as well as smaller-scale operations in the east and south.

A total of 213 people were killed in fighting Sunday, according to the Observatory.

Activists say more than 20,000 people have died in 17 months of fighting in Syria, as an uprising that started with peaceful protests against Assad's rule has morphed into a civil war.

In Damascus, meanwhile, Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa appeared in public on Sunday for the first time in weeks, ending rumors that he had defected. Reporters saw him get out of his car and walk to his office for a meeting with Alaeddin Boroujerdi, head of Iran's powerful parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy.

There have been a series of high-level defections from the Assad regime in the past few months.

Al-Sharaa was last seen at the funeral of four top security officials killed in a blast in Damascus on July 18. Since then, there had been rumors that he defected to Jordan, though al-Sharaa's office and Jordan repeatedly denied that.

On the Turkish-Syrian border, meanwhile, several thousand Syrians gathered at the Bab al-Salameh border crossing, having fled airstrikes in their northern towns and villages. They squatted on the sidewalks of three large hangars once used for cargo inspections of trucks. Some said they had been there a week or more.

Mohammed Abdel-Hay, 41, said his family of seven fled the village of Marea after a regime warplane bombed it last week, destroying a house and killing two people.

"They shelled us and we didn't leave. They hit us with helicopters and we didn't leave. Then they brought warplanes that dropped huge bombs that destroyed entire houses and we left," he said.

Since then, the family had staked out a patch of sidewalk where they sat on a plastic mat with a few grain sacks full of clothes.

Mustafa Khatib, 40, a middle school principal from the same village, was living in the hangar with his wife and their five children.

It had only one set of latrines, which the women and children used; the men used nearby fields. Water was in short supply and Khatib said he hadn't showered in a week. He said he'd eaten only a piece of bread and a hard-boiled egg all day Sunday.

Like most of the families, he hoped to get into a refugee camp in Turkey, but had been told there was no room.

"We'll stay here and wait and see," he said. "Every day, we ask and they tell us today or tomorrow, but they've been saying that for a week and we're still here."

Senior Care in Cypress TX?: Understand the Resources Needed to Keep Seniors in Their Own Homes

?

According to a report by the MetLife Mature Market Institute, most people over the age of 45 express a desire to live in their own Senior Care Cypress TXhome even when assistance becomes necessary. In addition, over 25 percent of seniors report that they fear the loss of their independence and moving to a nursing home more than they fear death itself. However, home care is often possible with adequate support, resources and information.

As individuals age, the need for assistance tends to grow, often in accordance to health problems that progressively worsen or multiply. While nursing homes are often the traditional solution for many elder care problems,?senior care?at home is another option that often allows the senior to remain in their home and maintain a sense of independence, privacy and dignity. However, as with any other solutions, keeping the senior at home requires some advance planning.

Budget

According to the MetLife report, one in five seniors in the U.S. faces considerable costs for long-term care. Most insurance companies offer only limited health care costs and only if ?skilled care needs? are included in the policy.

Seniors and their families should plan for long-term costs including a home care companion. This includes changes to accompany the senior?s movement and safety in the home, transportation, entertainment, prescription and over-the-counter medication as well as co-pays, laboratory tests and other medical costs.

Daily Tasks?

Some of the tasks that most healthy adults take for granted but many seniors require assistance for include bathing, dressing, eating, walking, toileting and taking medication as recommended/prescribed.?Senior care?companions and family members can assist the senior with these daily tasks and allow them to remain in the home through adequate elder care, thereby maintaining a sense of dignity and independence.

Transportation

Another necessary aspect of home-based care includes transportation to and from doctor?s appointments, running errands and visiting friends and family. A?senior care?home companion, family members or some services that provide transportation for seniors to various activities and appointments may meet this need.

Meals

Many seniors can no longer do the grocery shopping or prepare meals on their own and require assistance for these tasks. Again, this is a need that home companions may help fill, as can family members and some organizations that visit seniors daily to bring them meals.

Home Design

As seniors age, their needs in the home change and could possibly require some modification to the home as a result. For example, an individual may no longer be able to navigate stairs safely or easily or might have difficulty getting in and out of the shower or bathtub. In addition, the home needs to be well lit and clear of clutter or items that may cause the senior to trip or fall.

Entertainment

No one wants to sit around all day with nothing to do, so entertainment is a necessary element when it comes to senior home living arrangements. This may include television, movies, reading, music, puzzles and regular visitors as well as social outings.

The coordination of all of these factors typically requires a person to act as a?senior care?coordinator to ensure that all aspects of care at home are present. Finding the necessary resources and support to do so is often an expensive proposition. Both planning and saving should be performed in advance as much as possible to alleviate the associated costs and to prepare adequately for the senior to remain at home as long as possible.

Police: Woman says man called from Ark. squad car

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? The girlfriend of a man who was fatally shot in the back of an Arkansas patrol car told an investigator that he called her from the car and said he had a gun with him, police said Wednesday.

Jonesboro police offered those and other new details in a four-page statement about the investigation into the July 28 death of 21-year-old Chavis Carter. The death was ruled a suicide in an autopsy report released earlier this week.

Carter's girlfriend also told the investigator that Carter said he loved her and that he was scared, according to the police statement, which did not identify the woman. Phone records showed Carter made two calls, at least one of which was from the back of the patrol car, police said.

Benjamin Irwin, a Memphis, Tenn., lawyer representing Carter's family, said Wednesday that he was reviewing the latest information from police.

"I think the critical points still remain that this young man was in police custody," he said. "He lost his life at a time when they had a responsibility and duty to protect him."

Police have been facing criticism since they said officers searched Carter twice but didn't find a gun before he was fatally shot in a patrol car. Race is also an issue in the case because Carter was black and police have said the two officers who stopped the truck he was in are white.

The police statement said there appears to be no doubt that an officer missed the gun when he initially patted Carter down.

"It is presumed that Carter secreted the gun in the rear of the car after the pat-down but before the cuffing and second search," the statement said.

The statement said it was meant to be "a brief preliminary investigative summary" and noted that the investigation into Carter's death isn't complete. However, the statement said evidence and witness statements support the medical examiner's conclusion that Carter killed himself.

Spokesman Sgt. Lyle Waterworth didn't respond to an email or phone message seeking further comment.

Police also said they tracked down a man from a video on Carter's phone who said he sent Carter a text message asking him to bring him a gun shortly before his run-in with the officers. That man also said Carter was involved with a drug deal involving 4 ounces of marijuana, police said.

Police have said officers found marijuana on Carter when they searched him. The autopsy report also said he tested positive for meth and other drugs.

The police statement also said blood spatter on Carter's right hand showed his hand was close to the contact wound on his right temple. Blood was also on a rear passenger door of the patrol car, police said.

Officers and bystanders said the patrol car doors and windows were closed and that the officers weren't near the car until Carter was found, police said.

"This virtually eliminates any possibility that the fatal wound was caused by any weapon other than the one recovered in the rear of the vehicle and that its discharge was caused by Carter," police said in the statement.

The Arkansas state crime lab confirmed Wednesday that it did not perform gunshot residue testing on Carter, saying it doesn't do that kind of analysis on victims of homicides or suicides.

The confirmation came after Jonesboro Police Chief Michael Yates told The Associated Press that the department had requested the testing but that it wasn't done because of the agency's policy.

The lab's chief criminalist, Lisa Channell, said the testing can indicate whether a person was in an environment with gunshot residue, but "it cannot tell you whether the person pulled the trigger or not."

The crime lab's policy is not new. A 2001 memo sent to law enforcement officers said being in close proximity to a gun when it's fired can lead to positive gunshot residue test results and that negative gunshot residue results don't mean someone didn't fire a gun.

Still, Irwin questioned why the test wasn't conducted.

"To me, that's horrible," he said.

Police previously released video recorded from dashboard cameras the night of the shooting, but the footage didn't appear to show when officers found Carter slumped over and bleeding in the backseat of a patrol car as described in a police report.

Police said there were problems with the audio and video that explain the absence of a gunshot or noise on the recordings.

Irwin, Carter's family's lawyer, didn't buy that explanation.

"These things are crystal clear from a reception standpoint and from a functioning standpoint," he said. "And then they just malfunction for three minutes when this young man lost his life? I am just not ready to accept that as the answer."

The police statement came out less than an hour before Carter's mom marched with the Rev. Jesse Jackson and other supporters in Jonesboro.

"We hope that people concerned about justice, white and black, would find some common ground as we pursue this case of justice," Jackson told reporters in Memphis, Tenn., hours before the Jonesboro march. "We simply want justice and fairness in the land. ... We are convinced the explanations given so far are not credible ones."

Michael Jackson's Will & Trust Doing Their Job - Idaho Estate Planning

Michael Jackson died three years ago. This summer you may have heard that some of his family members are claiming that his will and trust are fraudulent and false. What you may not have heard is that both documents have been very successful at doing exactly what Mr. Jackson wished. The chances that either will ever be overturned or even considered for such action are virtually zero. Forbes magazine reporter Zack O'Malley Greenberg has an article on the subject that is well worth your time and should give you confidence in getting your own estate planning documents in order. The article titled "The Scandalously Boring Will of Michael Jackson" can be found here.

There is one more lesson to be learned from the untimely death of the "King of Pop", plan now. The plans in your head and the wishes in your heart cannot benefit your heirs unless they are properly documented . The best intentions in the world are nothing without implementation. Godd planning is no accident.

?It?s the people who are politically connected, it?s the people who have access to Washington that get the breaks,? he told an enthusiastic crowd of over 2,000 at a high school gym in Virginia.

?Well, no more. We don?t want to pick winners and losers in Washington? . Hardworking taxpayers should be treated fairly and it should be based on whether they?re good, whether they work hard and not who they know in Washington. That?s entrepreneurialism. That?s free enterprise.?

Sounds good, but earlier this week ? three days after being picked as Romney?s running-mate ? Ryan went to Las Vegas to pay homage to Sheldon Adelson, the casino billionaire who is the poster boy for using money to become ?politically connected? in Washington, and getting the ?breaks? that come with it. Adelson has promised to donate up to $100 million to make sure Romney and Ryan are in the White House next year.

Much of Adelson?s fortune comes from his casino in Macau, in China, via his money-greased access to Washington.

When China?s pitch for the 2008 Olympics was endangered by a House resolution opposing the bid because of China?s ?abominable human rights record,? Adelson phoned Tom DeLay, then House majority whip and recipient of Adelson?s political generosity ? urging him to block the resolution, which DeLay promptly did. The next day, according to the New York Times, a Chinese vice premier promised Mr. Adelson an endless line of gamblers to the Macau casino.

The money Adelson has committed to putting Romney and Ryan into the White House is a business investment. Adelson has a lot riding on the 2012 election.

Last year, his Las Vegas Sands Corporation came under investigation by the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission for possible violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act ? bribing Chinese officials to help expand its casino in Macau.

The U.S. attorney?s office in Los Angeles, meanwhile, is investigating whether the Sands Corporation violated federal money-laundering laws by accepting more than $100 million from high-rolling gamblers accused of drug trafficking and embezzlement, rather than reporting the suspicious funds to the government.

Ryan has also been a major recipient of contributions from billionaire energy moguls Charles and David Koch. Koch Industries PAC has donated more than $100,000 to Ryan?s campaigns and his leadership PAC ? more than any other corporate PAC, according to a NY Times analysis of campaign records.

You see, Koch industries spans a variety of oil and gas investments ? whose value would be compromised if Congress and the White House got serious about climate change.

Small wonder Paul Ryan has emerged as one of Congress?s most outspoken skeptics of climate change. He has also repeatedly voted against energy efficiency standards, including a House vote to prohibit the EPA from regulating greenhouse gases.

Several months ago, when I debated Paul Ryan on ABC-TV?s ?This Week,? he said we need to shrink the size of government because big corporations and wealthy individuals otherwise use government to their advantage.

?If the power and money are going to be here in Washington, that?s where the influence is going to go ? that?s where the powerful are going to go to influence it,? he said.

It?s an odd argument coming from Ryan because his proposed budget doesn?t shrink government by cutting benefits and payments to big business and the rich. He increases military payments to defense contractors, for example, slashes Wall Street regulations, and gives giant tax benefits to the rich.

His budget shrinks government mainly by cutting benefits and payments to the poor and lower-income Americans. Over?60 percent?of his spending cuts target programs for Americans in the bottom third of the income ladder.

Ryan is correct when he says ?it?s the people who are politically connected, it?s the people who have access to Washington that get the breaks.?

But his faux populism obscures the main point. A much smaller government still dominated by money would continue to do the bidding of billionaires like casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, energy moguls like the Koch bothers, military contractors, and other high rollers now actively trying to put Ryan and Romney into the White House.

It just wouldn?t do anything for the rest of us.
